Synesthesia Brings Three Nights of Electronic Music and Art to Bulldog Creek

The camping festival fills two stages near Sturgis with electronic music, interactive art, workshops, flow activities and a late-night silent disco September 4–7.

Electronic music will run well past midnight this weekend at Bulldog Creek Campground as Synesthesia Music & Arts Festival brings three nights of DJs, producers, visual art and camping to the hills outside Sturgis.

Synesthesia begins Friday, September 4, and continues through early Monday morning. The festival combines two full-production stages with interactive art, vendors, daytime workshops, flow arts and other campground activities.

The event is organized by Stupid Happy Collective, a group formed around Rapid City’s underground electronic-music community in 2019. The first Synesthesia grew out of a much smaller music and camping gathering near Keystone. After moving to Elk Creek Resort, the festival settled at Bulldog Creek Campground in 2023.

This year’s lineup includes Black Hills artists alongside performers traveling from elsewhere in the region and across the country. Black Hole Era, Digital Gnomad, Deacon Blu, Nizzbeats, Penumbra, Conduit, Homemade Spaceship, Cooper Timm and dozens of others appear on the festival’s recently released schedule.

Two stages and three nights of music

Friday’s music is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m. on The Cove stage, with the Sight & Sound stage opening at 6:30 p.m. Performances continue past 1 a.m.

Both stages run throughout Saturday. Music begins at 11 a.m. on Sight & Sound and at 3 p.m. inside The Cove, with the final scheduled sets beginning shortly after midnight.

Sunday’s program begins at 1 p.m. on The Cove and at 2:30 p.m. on Sight & Sound. The main stage schedule ends around 10:30 p.m., followed by a silent disco inside The Cove beginning at 11:30 p.m. and continuing late into the night.

Some of the weekend’s scheduled sets include Digital Gnomad and Black Hole Era on Friday; Cooper Timm, Deacon Blu, Penumbra, Nizzbeats and Conduit on Saturday; and Homemade Spaceship, Luke Petruzzi, Grid.Bloom, Quartzizion and a downtempo Conduit set on Sunday.

The newest adjusted lineup may not yet be fully reflected in the schedule graphics. Festivalgoers should consult the Synesthesia Facebook page for cancellations, replacements and updated set times.

More than the nighttime lineup

The daytime schedule gives campers several things to do before the larger evening sets begin.

Yoga at The Cove starts at 10 a.m. Saturday and Sunday. Music-production workshops follow from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., with XenoLinguist leading Saturday’s workshop and TR!P HVZVRD and Memory Lapse scheduled Sunday.

Introductory flow-arts sessions begin at 1 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Saturday covers flow stars, while Sunday introduces rope darts. A Flomie Meetup and open-flow period follows at 2 p.m.

Magic: The Gathering sessions are scheduled from 3–6 p.m. both days, and a waterslide will operate during Saturday and Sunday’s daytime activities.

The festival will also include food trucks, vendors, live art, performances and installations throughout the campground.

A festival built around the campground

General admission includes tent camping Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Campers can choose between a shaded, quieter area near the second stage and an unshaded camping area closer to the main stage.

RV sites and cabins are not included with festival admission and must be arranged separately through Bulldog Creek Campground.

Synesthesia is open to all ages, but organizers describe it as an event designed primarily for adults. Parents should expect loud music, late nights, possible explicit lyrics and festival attire. Children must remain with an adult, and there is no separate child admission price.

Arrival: The official ticket page lists the festival opening at noon Friday. The weekend concludes early Monday morning.

Tickets: The most recent advance price listed through the festival was $119, plus taxes and service fees. Check the official ticket page for current availability and pricing.

Camping: Tent camping is included. RV sites and cabins require separate reservations through the campground.

Bring cash: Cards are accepted at the main gate, but cellular service may be slow. Some vendors may not be able to accept cards.

Campground rules: No glass, weapons or wood fires are permitted. Guests are expected to leave no trace and avoid disturbing wildlife.

Pets: Pets are not allowed. Service animals are permitted, but organizers ask attendees to contact them in advance.

Re-entry: Attendees may leave and return as long as they show their festival wristband.

Directions: Organizers recommend using Google Maps. They warn that Apple Maps may direct drivers to the wrong exit. Bulldog Creek Campground is located off Exit 37.
