Black Hills Original Music Gets a Listening Night at Iron Horse Saloon
Rekall Studios Sturgis hosts a September 12 listening party and donation drive benefiting children served by Children’s Home Society.
The Black Hills Original Music Listening Party starts at 7 p.m. September 12 in Sturgis. Produced by Rekall Studios Sturgis, the all-ages event will feature recordings by artists from around the region while collecting musical instruments, clothing, shoes, toys and financial donations for Children’s Home Society of South Dakota.
For Jameson, who provides recording, booking and promotional support through Rekall Studios Sturgis, the idea starts with an affection for music made by people with their own stories to tell.
“I believe musicians who have the gift and grit to do the thing, should be heard by as many people as we can reach,” he said.
He has watched artists including Johnny Hastings and Camp Comfort release music and work to get it in front of listeners. He wants to take on some of that work himself.
“However, finding people to help promote can often be a struggle, and I want to help fulfill that need.”
Saturday’s listening roster includes Johnny Hastings, Matt Miniea, Chris Huisenga, Josh Marquis, Tony Black Wolf, Half Dead & Guardian Angel, C-Critt Veda, The Doombots and Speed City Demons, with more music being added. Jameson is still accepting submissions.
The evening will center on those recordings. Each artist’s music will be introduced with information about their social media, streaming services and live shows, giving people a way to follow up on something they hear. Some musicians will be there in person; others have performances of their own that night.
Instruments for the Next Players
The donation drive builds on an effort Jameson organized last year through Rekall Studios Sturgis. At a jam, donors brought guitars, a bass, a violin, clothes, toys and shoes, along with money.
Jameson said the money went to one family, whose child also got first pick of the donated instruments. The remaining instruments were distributed to children interested in music, and the clothing, shoes and toys went to people who needed them.
This Saturday, the collection will support children served by Children’s Home Society of South Dakota. Iron Horse Saloon is accepting donations ahead of the event as well as during the listening party.
Although the flyer lists a $10 cover, Jameson clarified that it is a suggested donation.
“We aren’t going to exclude people that are there to help over the cover donation, it’s just a part of trying to raise funds for foster kids.”
Iron Horse Saloon is hosting the evening, Rekall Studios Sturgis is producing it, and Culver Mechanics in Sturgis is sponsoring it. Businesses interested in contributing can make checks payable to Children’s Home Society of South Dakota.
Jameson hopes to hold more listening parties and is also planning a future event benefiting veterans. For this round, he is still gathering songs to introduce over the Iron Horse sound system on Saturday night.
