Humbletown
Humbletown is a Lead-based folk and bluegrass project formed by Morgan Carnes and Dylan Lewis in Vermillion, South Dakota, in 2017. Carnes' clawhammer banjo and Lewis' flatpicked guitar anchor original music that draws from bluegrass, old-time, Americana, country and swing. The band released The Path I Chose to Walk in 2022 and is currently working on its second studio album.
About
Humbletown began in Vermillion in 2017 after Morgan Carnes and Dylan Lewis met through mutual musician friends and began performing together within weeks. The project later relocated to the Black Hills and is now based in Lead. Carnes plays clawhammer banjo and Lewis plays flatpick guitar and mandolin; both write songs and sing, building their music around close harmonies and influences from bluegrass, old-time music, Americana, classic country and swing.
The project can take several forms. Carnes and Lewis remain Humbletown’s core members, while upright bassist James Schrag has performed with the group for several years. Current official material also names mandolinist Evan Ogborn, while other tours and performances have included musicians such as fiddler Ben Lemay and mandolinist Michael Prewitt.
Humbletown released its debut album, The Path I Chose to Walk, in 2022. The 12-song record includes “Vines,” a song Carnes described as a tribute to the Black Hills and its gold-mining culture; its video was filmed at a hiking spot in Spearfish Canyon.
In early 2026, Humbletown raised $27,731 from 218 supporters to record a second studio album with producer and engineer Dalton Coffey. The album’s title and release date have not yet been reliably published.
