Banff Centre Mountain Film Festival

April 20 to 21, 2026

The Banff Centre Mountain Film Festival returns to Rapid City as part of its world tour, bringing a lineup of films rooted in mountains, movement, and the people who build their lives around both.

Each year, the festival pulls from a larger international program out of Banff, narrowing it down to a selection that travels city to city. What lands in Rapid City is a mix of short films that move between climbing, skiing, trail running, and remote exploration, alongside quieter stories about endurance, risk, and the kind of decisions that happen far from roads.

The audience tends to reflect the setting. You’ll see climbers, runners, skiers, and people who spend time in the Hills sitting next to those just curious about the landscapes on screen. It’s not one type of crowd, but it holds together once the lights go down.

The films shift in tone throughout the night. Some are fast and physical, built around speed and terrain. Others slow down, focusing on individuals and the long arcs behind what looks like a single moment.

It’s one of the few nights where the room is built around watching instead of moving, but the connection to the outdoors stays constant, even from a theater seat in Rapid City.
